I sound, if I'm doing it in my most natural form, I sound like rock.
Paul Levy is the lead singer of Sadbox, who you'll also see playing guitar. A Sadbox show consists of a bunch of dads on stage playing rock music, so one could certainly categorize them as "dad rock". He and his band were responsible for the single most joyful musical moment of 2021 for me. Paul is both ebullient and gregarious, and that'll come across loud and clear in our chat. How does Paul know when a song is finished? Why does he say that he is a French Press? How did Paul manage to work the word gestalt into the discussion? How much do the songs change when he brings them to the rest of the band?
Here are some highlights of our conversation:
- About the most recent Sadbox album Future Copy, and an introduction to the band. (1:44)
- The beginning of Paul's songwriting process. (15:00)
- About how Paul does not edit when he is writing songs. (20:42)
- The band's influence on the songs that Paul brings to the table. (28:37)
