Episode 75 - Olivia Frances

these three hundred songs, they're all assets... they're all pieces of magic that started on a blank piece of paper

A few years ago, I arrived at Yellow Cab Tavern to play a show at my favorite curated open mic, Showcase Thursday. I had been told that we had an artist from Nashville in town to play with us that night. It's not every week that we get someone on tour to stop by, so I was very much looking forward to meeting this intrepid individual. The intrepid individual turned out to be Olivia Frances.  Since then, every time she comes through Dayton, I try to get myself on the bill so that I can play with her.

Olivia is a talented songwriter and performer, with three albums already under her belt, and over 300 songs in her catalog. We talk about her songwriting process in this conversation, and about why she enjoys co-writing. She'll tell us the first tool she reaches for when it's time to write, and also tells us how she knows when a song is done. What drives the decision in a writing room as to which artist will record the song?  You'll find out how that works and more about Olivia from this conversation.
